Introduction to The Department of Sociology

The Department of Sociology, formerly known as Faculty of Sociology, was established at the same time as Van Hien University. Currently, the Department of Sociology is a part of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, at Van Hien University.

The department has five permanent staff members and lecturers, including one Associate Professor, two Doctors, and three Masters. All staff members and lecturers are committed to cultivating both virtue and talent, as reflected in their teaching and scientific research. The lecturers have published articles in specialized journals, and have conducted numerous research projects at the university, provincial, and ministerial levels, which have been highly regarded and have contributed to teaching and scientific research.

Additionally, to enhance the quality and reputation of the faculty and the university, the Department of Sociology also invites many visiting lecturers with academic titles, degrees, and practical experience from leading universities across the country.

In terms of training, the Department of Sociology at Van Hien University has a proud history of achievements. The department has trained nearly 700 graduates with high professional skills for society. At Van Hien University's Sociology Department, students will be equipped with knowledge about theories, methodologies, and practical knowledge to study social principles and phenomena. Additionally, students will gain knowledge and practical skills to identify and analyze institutions, social phenomena, events, the functions of society, and their impacts on human behavior and social life.

Currently, the Sociology Department offers three in-depth specializations: Sociology in Journalism and Media, Sociology in Organizational Management, and Social Work. These are highly practical specializations in modern life, suitable for all individuals as they offer the potential for job opportunities in various fields.

Moreover, to ensure students have secure jobs that match their expertise after graduation, besides classroom learning, the Sociology Department focuses on professional skills training and scientific research. The department has established relationships with research centers, social welfare centers, businesses, and companies in Ho Chi Minh City and nearby provinces to provide students with reliable places for internships and practical experiences. Alongside professional skill training, the department encourages students to participate in extracurricular activities and scientific research. Many student groups and individuals from the Sociology Department have won scientific research awards such as Eureka and ministerial-level awards. They are also enthusiastic participants in youth and union activities. Through these experiences, students can develop their professional skills, shape and enhance their personalities, and adapt well to working environments after graduation.

Job Opportunities After Graduation:

  • Working in public relations: Becoming reporters or editors at news agencies, radio and television stations, publishers, political and social organizations related to information, communication, or event organization.
  • Working in business and management: Managing civil organizations, overseeing social investment projects, managing human resources, customer relations, statistics, sales, and customer management.
  • Working in research and consultancy: Researching and consulting on sustainable development policies, market research, communication and advertising consultancy, and public opinion surveys.
  • Working in human services: Serving as coordinators or specialists for development funds, foreign sponsorships in Vietnam, non-governmental organizations, and charities, or working as social workers and community developers.
  • Working in public administration: Serving as specialists in government agencies (culture, labor, population, education, healthcare, statistics, ethnicity, civil affairs, propaganda), Party and union organizations, security agencies, and social evils prevention.
  • Working in education and training: Teaching at universities and colleges, conducting short-term training for organizations or communities in need, and working as research specialists at research centers or institutes in various social fields.

Over more than twenty years of development, the Sociology Department – Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at Van Hien University has continuously upheld the university’s educational philosophy: "Becoming a person before achieving success." This has enabled the Sociology Department to earn the trust and affection of many generations of students and meet the expectations of society.
