Introduction to the Department of Psychology at Van Hien University

Established in 1997, the Department of Psychology at Van Hien University—formerly known as the Faculty of Psychology—holds the distinction of being the first non-public university in Vietnam to offer training in Psychology. Since 2013, the Department of Psychology has been a part of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. Since 2020, it has belonged to the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communications. And then in September 2024, the name of Faculty had been changed to Faculty of Sciences and Humanities.

Our psychology program offers two specialized majors:

1. Counseling and Psychotherapy

2. Psychological Counseling and Human Resource Management

Our department boasts a dedicated team of 8 permanent staffs and lecturers, including:

- 1 Associate Professor with a PhD

- 4 PhD holders

- 3 Master’s degree holders

for Undergraduate Psychology Program from the Ministry of Education and Training in 2023

Our faculty members are committed to upholding the highest standards of ethics, expertise, and professionalism through their teaching and research activities. They have published articles in renowned journals such as the Journal of Psychology and the Journal of Social Psychology. Their research spans various fields of psychology, including psychotherapy, psychological counseling, social psychology, and educational psychology, garnering high praise and significantly contributing to our teaching quality. We also collaborate with esteemed visiting lecturers and experts from both domestic and international institutions.

Experience and Achievements

With 25 years of experience, our department continuously innovates our programs and teaching methods with a strong application-oriented approach. This dedication has established our reputation and trust within society. In February 2023, our undergraduate psychology program received a Certificate of Educational Quality Standards from the Ministry of Education and Training. Since our inception, we have trained nearly 900 psychology bachelors, with enrollment increasing annually. In November 2024, we have launched our Master's psychology program, having received approval from the Ministry of Education and Training.

Practical Application and Industry Connections

A hallmark of our psychology training program is the emphasis on practical application. We maintain close ties with various training units, such as:

1. Junior high and high schools

2. Child development intervention centers, psychological counseling centers, and psychotherapy centers.

3. Hospitals, including Ho Chi Minh City Mental Hospital, Children’s Hospital 1, Children’s Hospital 2, and Tien Giang Mental Hospital, etc.

4. Companies and enterprises across the Southern provinces.

We regularly organize student visits to these facilities for career experiences, practice, and internships. Many students secure part-time positions in these institutions as early as their third year.

Student Activities and Achievements

Beyond classroom learning, our psychology students actively engage in extracurricular activities and scientific research. Many have received awards such as the Euréka and ministerial scientific research prizes. Participation in various movements and associations allows students to develop their careers and personalities.

Career Opportunities for Graduates

Our graduates are highly sought after by high schools, psychiatric hospitals, general hospitals, counseling centers, and large enterprises. Many alumni continue their studies, earning Master's and Doctoral degrees, and some have become lecturers at colleges and universities across Vietnam.
