The 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam clearly defined the country as entering a "national era of self-improvement," marking a new stage of development with great aspirations for modernization and deep integration. In this process, youth are affirmed as the core force, both as creative agents and as the decisive resource for the nation's future. However, along with these development opportunities comes a rapid increase in non-traditional security challenges – issues that are not traditionally military in nature but profoundly impact the stability and sustainable development of society. From cybersecurity, climate change, global pandemics to the infiltration of harmful and toxic information, all are creating a new, more complex and difficult-to-control security environment. Essentially, these are not just external threats, but also comprehensive tests of the political acumen, values, and self-protection capabilities of each individual, especially the younger generation.
Cybersecurity – a new arena of cognitive conflict and challenges to social trust
The explosion of digital technology and artificial intelligence has fundamentally changed how people access and process information. The internet has become the primary environment for communication, learning, and creativity among young people. However, this unlimited expansion also increases the risk of spreading fake news, misinformation, distortions, and hate speech. Notably, this information is not only scattered but often deliberately organized, exploiting the psychology, emotions, and lack of verification of the recipient. When the line between right and wrong is blurred, and without the ability to analyze and critically evaluate, young people easily fall into a state of "cognitive confusion," leading to wavering beliefs and even deviations in political stance. Thus, cybersecurity is not just a technical issue, but more fundamentally, a matter of protecting "ideological security" in the digital age.
Cultural and ideological security in the face of globalization pressures and changing value systems
In the context of deep international integration, cultural exchange is an inevitable trend, contributing to enriching the spiritual life of society. However, this process also brings with it negative consequences if there is a lack of selection and guidance. In reality, a segment of young people are showing signs of pursuing a pragmatic lifestyle, prioritizing material values, and neglecting ideals and social responsibility. Extreme individualism, indifference to traditional values, and a lack of community awareness are becoming worrying manifestations. Essentially, this is not just a change in behavior or lifestyle, but also a sign of deviation in the value system, potentially leading to "self-evolution" and "self-transformation" within the group. If not identified and corrected in time, these manifestations could weaken the ideological foundation and affect the long-term stability of society.
Ho Chi Minh's ideology – the guiding foundation and inherent strength of youth
Faced with the complex challenges of non-traditional security, Ho Chi Minh's thought continues to affirm its enduring value and profound relevance. Core principles such as patriotism, revolutionary ethics, self-reliance, self-improvement, and a sense of responsibility to the community are not only traditional moral standards but also a "immune system" that helps young people resist negative impacts from the external environment. In particular, the view that "youth are the masters of the nation's future" is not only an affirmation of their position but also a requirement for responsibility: every young person must proactively cultivate political acumen, enhance self-reliance, and master science and technology. This shows that the strength of youth lies not only in knowledge but also in the depth of their thought and their ability to remain steadfast in the face of the changes of the times.
Comprehensive solutions for responding to non-traditional security challenges
To ensure non-traditional security in the new context, a synchronized effort from both the political system and individuals is needed. Youth organizations and associations should continue to innovate the content and methods of political theory education in a modern direction, strongly applying digital technology, while simultaneously developing media products that are relatable and attractive to young people. Proactively creating a "positive online space"—a place to disseminate official information and positive values—is an urgent task to guide public opinion and strengthen social trust. In addition, it is necessary to strengthen activities to educate young people in digital skills, communication skills, and critical thinking abilities, helping them to protect themselves from misinformation. For each young person, the decisive factor remains self-awareness: continuously learning, cultivating morality, enhancing knowledge, and preserving national cultural identity. A harmonious blend of modern knowledge and traditional values will create a solid foundation for young people to adapt to the changes of the times.
A message to Vietnamese youth and students in the era of national progress
Faced with increasingly diverse and sophisticated non-traditional security challenges, the younger generation needs more than ever a strong political stance, unwavering spirit, and unwavering determination. Political fortitude is not just the ability to discern right from wrong, but also the resilience in the face of negative influences; unwavering determination is not just upholding ideals, but also consistency in action; and unwavering determination is the driving force to overcome difficulties and challenges.
In the digital age, young people need to master technology but not let it dominate them, embrace new things without losing their identity, and maintain a correct political orientation in all circumstances. According to Ho Chi Minh's thought, young people must be both "red" (ideologically sound) and "expert" (professionally competent), harmoniously combining revolutionary ethics and professional competence, with patriotism and social responsibility as their foundation. Therefore, every student needs to constantly study, train, improve their knowledge, master science and technology, and nurture the aspiration to contribute. More importantly, they must know how to put the interests of the Fatherland and the people above all else, transforming ideals into concrete actions. Only when they possess intellect, courage, and willpower can Vietnamese youth truly become a vanguard force, contributing to national development and firmly protecting the ideological foundation, leading Vietnam forward steadily in the new era.
